In December 2020, Learning Economy Foundation partnered with The World Bank to launch a community of practice and workshop series focused on Blockchain for Education. “The World Bank's Blockchain for Education Community of Practice (COP) brings together individuals and organizations working on the use of blockchain technologies to create value in education systems. Members discuss the practical realities of effectively utilizing related technologies and share lessons from their work and research.” A core focus of this initiative is to engage Ministries of Education interested in the use of educational technologies to improve teaching and learning outcomes and empower their citizens and learners.

Through this ongoing partnership and community, we have been able to connect global networks and partners in an effort to showcase and highlight a variety of pilot projects and use cases throughout the world. To guide our collective efforts we focused our learning events with six topics:

  • Blockchain and fintech for education
  • Education ecosystems and crypto-networks
  • Skills economy
  • Learner centered credentials,
  • Assessment and measurement
  • Token economics

One major goal of both the workshop series and community of practice is to collaborate across geographical boundaries on the development and implementation of pilot projects and generate open source global public goods.

Growing the IoE

This initiative has provided a platform for LEF to take action on guiding principles outlined by the Internet of Education which includes making strides toward two Sustainable Development Goals put forth by the United Nations; quality education and decent work and economic growth. Not only has the community of practice connected and energized partners across the globe, it has created opportunity for economic growth and continued development of shared, open learning standards. We are honored and humbled by the power of our global partners and the impact being made on education systems throughout the world.
